Early Life
Amancio Ortega was born in Busdongo de Arbas, León, Spain, to Antonio Ortega Rodríguez and Josefa Gaona Hernández. He was the youngest of four children and spent his early years in Tolosa, Gipuzkoa, before moving to A Coruña at age 14 due to his father’s railway job.
Ortega’s first exposure to fashion came when he worked as a shop assistant at Gala, a local shirtmaker, where he learned handcrafting techniques and developed a deep understanding of clothing production. These early experiences shaped his future in the fashion industry.
Career and Inditex
Ortega began his entrepreneurial journey in 1963 by founding Confecciones Goa, a small company producing quilted bathrobes. His breakthrough came in 1975, when he opened the first Zara store alongside his then-wife Rosalía Mera.
Under Ortega’s leadership, Zara became a fast fashion leader, known for its ability to rapidly respond to changing trends and customer demands. He expanded the brand portfolio to form the Inditex Group, which now includes Massimo Dutti, Bershka, Stradivarius, Oysho, and Pull & Bear. By 2009, Inditex operated over 6,000 stores worldwide, employing more than 92,000 people.
Ortega is celebrated as a visionary retailer, known for implementing agile, innovative strategies that bypass traditional retail methods. Despite his enormous success, he maintains a low public profile, granting very few interviews. In 2011, Ortega retired from day-to-day operations, with Pablo Isla assuming his role as CEO.
Real Estate and Investments
Beyond fashion, Ortega is a prominent real estate investor through his company Pontegadea, managing strategic properties in major global cities including Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Berlin, London, and Rome. His holdings include high-value assets like Manhattan’s Haughwout Building and Miami’s Southeast Financial Center. In 2019, Pontegadea acquired a Chicago hotel for $72.5 million.
Ortega’s real estate portfolio, valued at $17.2 billion in 2020, complements his diversified investments in energy companies such as Enagás, Red Eléctrica, and Redes Energéticas Nacionais.
Philanthropy
Ortega is known for his generous philanthropic initiatives, particularly in healthcare. In 2017, he donated €300 million to improve cancer treatment in Spain, funding 440 stereotactic radiotherapy machines for public hospitals. He has also supported global charitable efforts, including a €20 million donation to Caritas Internationalis in 2012.
Personal Life
Ortega is famously private, avoiding the public spotlight. Until 1999, no photographs of him were published. He favors a simple wardrobe, often wearing a blue blazer, white shirt, and gray trousers, none of which are from Zara.
Ortega married Rosalía Mera in 1966, and they had two children, Marcos and Sandra Ortega Mera. The couple divorced in 1986, and Mera passed away in 2013. In 2001, Ortega married Flora Pérez Marcote, with whom he has a daughter, Marta Ortega Pérez.
He resides in A Coruña, Spain, and enjoys luxury assets including two yachts, Drizzle and Valoria B, and a Gulfstream G650 jet.

Amancio Ortega is widely recognized as a trailblazer in the global fashion industry, transforming fast fashion into a highly efficient, trend-responsive model.
