Early Life
Bhai Daya Singh, originally named Daya Ram, was born in 1661 into a Sobti Khatri family in Lahore, Punjab (present-day Pakistan). His father, Bhai Suddha, was a devoted follower of Guru Tegh Bahadur, and instilled strong spiritual values in his son from an early age. In 1677, Daya Ram’s family moved to Anandpur Sahib to seek the blessings of Guru Gobind Singh. There, he received extensive training in Persian, Punjabi, classical literature, Sikh philosophy, and martial arts, preparing him for a life of both spiritual and military service.

Khalsa Initiation
On March 30, 1699, during the historic gathering at Kesgarh Qila in Anandpur Sahib, Guru Gobind Singh called upon his followers to offer their heads as a symbolic act of sacrifice. Daya Singh was the first to step forward, becoming one of the Panj Pyare—the first five Sikhs to be initiated into the Khalsa. This act of courage and devotion helped establish the Khalsa order, which emphasized equality, discipline, and spiritual commitment. Afterward, Guru Gobind Singh himself was initiated into the Khalsa by Daya Singh and the other Panj Pyare.

Military Role and Battles
Bhai Daya Singh played a crucial role in many military campaigns alongside Guru Gobind Singh. He was actively involved in the Second Battle of Chamkaur and the defense of Anandpur Sahib. During the siege of Chamkaur in 1705, he, along with Guru Gobind Singh and two other Sikhs, made a daring escape from the besieged fort, traveling through hostile territories while ensuring the Guru’s safety.

Delivery of the Zafarnama
One of Daya Singh’s most notable contributions was delivering the Zafarnama, Guru Gobind Singh’s letter of defiance and demand for justice, to Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in Ahmadnagar. Alongside Bhai Dharam Singh, Daya Singh faced numerous challenges on the journey but displayed immense courage and resourcefulness, successfully completing the mission. This act exemplified his unwavering devotion to the Guru and the principles of the Khalsa.

Later Life and Death
After Guru Gobind Singh’s passing in 1708, Daya Singh continued to serve the Sikh community in Nanded, where he eventually passed away. His cremation site, along with that of Bhai Dharam Singh, is now commemorated by a memorial honoring their sacrifices.

Legacy
Bhai Daya Singh’s life is celebrated for his selflessness, bravery, and steadfast devotion to the Guru and the Khalsa. Early Sikh literature describes him as the reincarnation of Lava, highlighting his spiritual significance. He is believed to have authored a Rehitnama, a manual outlining the Sikh code of conduct, which remains influential in Sikh tradition. Gurdwaras, such as Gurdwara Bhai Daya Singh in Dhami Mahalla, Aurangabad, honor his contributions.
Through his spiritual, literary, and military accomplishments, Bhai Daya Singh left an enduring legacy in Sikh history, symbolizing courage, devotion, and unwavering commitment to the principles of the Khalsa.
