2 students dead after shooting at Antioch High School; 17-year-old shooter identified:-

A tragic shooting at Antioch High School on Wednesday morning claimed the life of a 16-year-old girl and left two other students injured. Metro police responded to the active shooter situation at approximately 11:11 a.m. after reports of gunfire on campus.

According to Vanderbilt University Medical Center officials, one of the injured students was treated at Vanderbilt Pediatrics for an eye injury sustained during the attack. Tactical units quickly secured and cleared the school grounds, ensuring the safety of remaining students and staff as authorities began their investigation into the incident.

Two School Resource Officers (SROs) were present on the Antioch High School campus during the shooting but were not near the cafeteria when the incident occurred. Metro police confirmed that the gunfire had stopped by the time officers arrived at the scene.

A reunification center was quickly established at 3754 Murfreesboro Pike, where students were transported for pickup, including those who usually travel by car. Parents seeking information regarding reunification were advised to call 615-401-1712 for assistance.

Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) implemented the following transportation plan:

  • Regular bus routes began leaving the Family Assistance Site at 2:15 p.m.
  • Students who typically ride the bus home were transported via their regular routes unless already picked up by parents.
  • Students who drove to school were allowed to return to Antioch High to retrieve their vehicles once the parking lot was cleared by police.
  • Students who walked to school were provided transportation home by MNPS if their parents had not yet arrived.
  • Car riders were instructed to be picked up at 3754 Murfreesboro Pike.
  • Traffic disruptions occurred near the scene, with Hobson Pike and portions of Murfreesboro Pike temporarily closed. Both routes have since reopened, with Tennessee Department of Transportation HELP trucks assisting in managing traffic flow.
  • To support the community, a healing gathering is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Hamilton Church United Family Fellowship, located at 3105 Hamilton Church Road.

Parents rush to reunification center after shooting at Antioch High School

Parents hurried to the designated reunification center after the tragic shooting at Antioch High School, as authorities and school officials worked to ensure the safety of students.

Less than 30 minutes after the incident, Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) released a statement confirming that the school was under lockdown following gunfire inside the building. The statement read:

“Antioch High School is currently on lockdown due to shots fired inside the building. Metro Police are on the scene, and the shooter is no longer a threat. Students will be gathered in the auditorium, and details about reunification will be provided soon. This remains an active crime scene, and the investigation is ongoing. We are working closely with the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) and will share updates as they become available.”

Following the announcement, a spokesperson for Nashville Public Schools expressed profound grief over the tragedy, stating:

“This is a heartbreaking day for the Antioch High School community and for all of us in Nashville Public Schools. Our thoughts are with the families impacted by this unimaginable loss. We deeply appreciate the quick and courageous actions of school staff, which likely prevented further tragedy, as well as the swift response from Metro Nashville police and fire officials.”

The spokesperson also reaffirmed the district’s commitment to understanding how the shooting occurred and preventing similar tragedies in the future.

“Our schools have long been places of safety, learning, and growth. While we mourn this terrible event, we must not let it define the positive spirit of our 80,000 students,” the statement added.

Antioch High School will remain closed for the rest of the week to give students and staff time to grieve. Grief counseling and mental health support will be available to affected students and families, while other schools in the district will stay open with additional counseling staff on site.

The district concluded by thanking the community for its compassion and solidarity:

“We are committed to standing with Antioch High School in the days and weeks ahead and are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support from our Nashville community during this heartbreaking time.”

What We Know So Far About the Antioch School Shooter

The White House confirmed that President Biden and his team are closely monitoring developments in Nashville following the tragic Antioch High School shooting. In an official statement, the administration expressed its deepest condolences to the victims’ families and gratitude toward first responders for their swift and courageous efforts.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee also addressed the tragedy, stating that he had been fully briefed on the situation and commended law enforcement for their rapid response. “As we await further details, I join all Tennesseans in praying for the victims, their families, and the entire school community,” he said.

Members of the Tennessee General Assembly released a joint statement mourning the victims, calling the incident a heartbreaking reminder of the urgent need to address gun violence among minors. The statement read:

“Our hearts are shattered for the families who lost their children today. A minor gained access to a handgun and committed an unimaginable act of violence, taking both his life and that of an innocent child. The truth is, there are policies we could have implemented — and still can — to prevent such tragedies. To those who choose inaction, imagine being the parent whose child isn’t coming home tonight.”

The statement concluded with a renewed commitment:

“Today, we grieve with our community. Tomorrow, we continue the fight to end gun violence.”

In response to the tragedy, United Family Fellowship Church in Antioch organized a community vigil Wednesday evening, offering a space for residents to pray, reflect, and seek comfort together.

Adrienne Battle, Superintendent of Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS), also addressed the incident, highlighting that despite the district’s extensive safety measures — including school resource officers, weapon-detection cameras, shatter-resistant glass, and secure entry vestibules — more must be done.

“Unfortunately, these measures were not enough to prevent this tragedy,” she said. “We must continue exploring new technologies and strategies to ensure our schools are safe for every student.”

Battle also acknowledged the ongoing debate around installing stationary metal detectors, noting that previous studies revealed limitations and unintended consequences, but emphasizing the district’s openness to reevaluating all safety tools.

Authorities also confirmed that school safety concerns at Antioch High are not new. In October 2024, a 16-year-old student was arrested after bringing a loaded gun to school. The weapon was discovered by school resource officers following a social media tip-off.

The latest shooting has reignited conversations about youth access to firearms, mental health support, and the effectiveness of current school safety protocols, as Nashville and the nation once again grapple with the devastating consequences of gun violence in schools.
