Born in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, into a Jain family, Adani was the son of Shantilal and Shantaben Adani, with his father running a modest textile business. One of eight siblings, Gautam attended Sheth Chimanlal Nagindas Vidyalaya in Ahmedabad before enrolling at Gujarat University for a degree in commerce. He left after his second year, drawn not to his father’s trade but to building enterprises of his own.
Career Beginings
Adani moved to Mumbai in 1978, where he worked as a diamond sorter with Mahendra Brothers. In 1981, his brother acquired a plastics unit in Ahmedabad, bringing Gautam in to manage operations. This opened the door to global trade through PVC imports. By 1985, he was importing polymers for small industries, and in 1988, he founded Adani Exports (later Adani Enterprises), which became the flagship of the Adani Group.
India’s economic liberalization in 1991 fueled his expansion into metals, textiles, and agro-products, laying the foundation for what would become a global empire.
Rise of the Adani Group
Adani’s breakthrough came in 1995, when his group won the contract to develop and operate Mundra Port in Gujarat. Today, operated by Adani Ports and SEZ (APSEZ), Mundra is India’s largest private port, handling over 210 million tons of cargo annually.
The group expanded into power generation (Adani Power, 1996), becoming the country’s largest private thermal power producer, and into renewable energy, winning a record $6 billion solar bid in 2020. Beyond energy, the group has made major moves in aviation, acquiring a controlling stake in Mumbai International Airport (2020), and in cement, purchasing Ambuja Cements and ACC from Holcim in 2022 for $10.5 billion.
The group also entered media with its acquisition of NDTV, a move that drew global attention and concerns over press independence given Adani’s perceived closeness to India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Controversies
- Adani’s meteoric rise has not been without scrutiny.
- In 2002, he was briefly arrested in a cheating case but released the next day after an out-of-court settlement.
- A 2012 share manipulation case saw charges later overturned, though revived again in 2020.
- His close ties with Prime Minister Narendra Modi have fueled persistent allegations of crony capitalism, though both have denied wrongdoing.
The Economist has described him as a “master operator” adept at navigating India’s political and regulatory systems, while critics argue that the group’s complex structure lacks transparency.
Personal Life
Gautam Adani married Priti Adani, a dentist, in 1986. The couple has two sons: Karan, CEO of Adani Ports & SEZ, and Jeet, who oversees Adani Airports and Adani Digital Labs. Priti chairs the Adani Foundation, which focuses on education, healthcare, and rural development.
Adani has also faced dramatic personal experiences—he was kidnapped for ransom in 1998 and later survived the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, narrowly escaping harm at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.
Legacy
From a small-time diamond sorter to one of the world’s most influential industrialists, Gautam Adani’s journey reflects ambition, risk-taking, and strategic vision. While celebrated for transforming India’s infrastructure landscape, his empire remains the subject of ongoing debate over transparency, governance, and political influence.
