Giovanni Ferrero

Giovanni Ferrero (born 21 September 1964) is an Italian entrepreneur, business leader, and author, widely recognized for leading Ferrero SpA, one of the world’s largest and most successful confectionery companies. Following the death of his brother, Pietro Ferrero, in 2011, Giovanni assumed control of the company and has overseen its global growth and diversification. As of 2024, Forbes estimates his net worth at approximately $43.8 billion, making him not only the richest person in Italy but also the 26th wealthiest individual worldwide.

Early Life and Education

Giovanni Ferrero was born in Farigliano, Italy, into the renowned Ferrero family, whose legacy includes globally iconic brands such as Nutella, Ferrero Rocher, and Kinder Chocolate. He is the son of Michele Ferrero and Maria Franca Fissolo. Growing up in a family where business discussions and confectionery innovation were part of daily life, Giovanni was immersed in the world of chocolates, spreads, and candy from an early age, gaining first-hand exposure to the operations of a multinational enterprise. In 1975, Ferrero moved to Brussels, Belgium, to attend the European School, where he received a multicultural and international education. This early exposure to diverse cultures and perspectives helped shape his global business outlook. He later pursued higher education in the United States, enrolling at Lebanon Valley College in Pennsylvania, where he studied marketing. His international education provided a strong foundation in business strategy, marketing, and global commerce, equipping him to lead a family business with worldwide reach

In 1997, he was appointed joint CEO alongside his brother Pietro, sharing responsibility for overseeing the company’s growing global footprint and introducing new products across international markets.

Tragically, Pietro Ferrero passed away in a cycling accident in South Africa in April 2011, prompting Giovanni to take over as sole CEO, with his father Michele providing guidance as executive chairman. After Michele’s passing in 2015, Giovanni became the company’s full leader, assuming both the roles of CEO and executive chairman. Under his leadership, Ferrero pursued strategic acquisitions to strengthen its position in the global confectionery industry, including the purchase of Thorntons in 2015 and Nestlé’s U.S. candy business in 2018, enhancing the company’s market share and product portfolio.

In 2017, Giovanni began focusing more on long-term strategic planning and innovation, appointing Lapo Civiletti as CEO while retaining his role as executive chairman. This allowed him to dedicate greater attention to global growth initiatives, sustainability programs, and the continuous development of new products that align with Ferrero’s tradition of quality and innovation.
