Gukesh Dommaraju (born 29 May 2006), popularly known as Gukesh D, is an Indian chess grandmaster and the reigning World Chess Champion. A phenomenal chess prodigy, he made history as the youngest player ever to surpass a FIDE rating of 2750 at just 17 years old and was previously the third-youngest to cross the 2700 mark at 16. Gukesh achieved the title of Grandmaster at the age of 12, becoming the third-youngest in the history of chess to reach that milestone.
His meteoric rise to international fame reached new heights in 2024, when he delivered a record-breaking performance at the 45th Chess Olympiad, capturing two individual gold medals, one team gold, and a team bronze for India. That same year, at just 18 years old, Gukesh won the Candidates Tournament, becoming its youngest-ever champion. He went on to defeat Ding Liren with a final score of 7½–6½, claiming the title of youngest undisputed World Chess Champion in history.
Earlier in his career, Gukesh displayed extraordinary promise by winning multiple gold medals at the World Youth Chess Championship and the Asian Youth Chess Championship, as well as a silver medal at the Asian Games.
