Gukesh Dommaraju (born 29 May 2006), widely known as Gukesh D, is an Indian chess grandmaster and the current World Chess Champion. A remarkable chess prodigy, he became the youngest player in history to cross a FIDE rating of 2750 at age 17, and was previously the third-youngest to cross the 2700 mark at just 16. He earned his grandmaster title at 12, making him the third-youngest grandmaster of all time.
Gukesh’s rise to global prominence accelerated in 2024, when he secured two individual gold medals and one team gold at the 45th Chess Olympiad, along with a team bronze for India. At 18, he became the youngest winner of the Candidates Tournament and subsequently the youngest undisputed World Chess Champion, defeating Ding Liren with a score of 7½–6½ to claim the 2024 world title. Earlier in his career, he earned multiple gold medals at both the World Youth Chess Championship and the Asian Youth Chess Championship, and also won a silver medal at the Asian Games.
