Julia Margaret Flesher Koch (born April 12, 1962) is an American philanthropist, socialite, and one of the wealthiest women in the world. As of September 2024, her net worth surpassed $74 billion, a fortune she inherited after the passing of her husband, billionaire industrialist David Koch, in 2019.
Early Life and Education
Julia was born in Des Moines, Iowa, to Margaret and Frederic Flesher, who owned a furniture business. Her family, originally rooted in farming, later shifted toward retail. She spent her childhood in Indianola, Iowa, before moving to Conway, Arkansas, where her parents ran a boutique clothing shop that Julia fondly described as “a beautiful store.”
After graduating high school, she attended the University of Central Arkansas. In 1984, she moved to New York City and began working as an assistant to designer Adolfo, helping with fittings for high-profile clients, including First Lady Nancy Reagan.
Marriage and Family
Julia met David Koch on a blind date in early 1991. Although sparks didn’t fly immediately, they reconnected later that year and began dating seriously. She left her fashion career in 1993, and in 1996 the couple married in Southampton, New York. They had three children: David Jr., Mary Julia, and John Mark. Their daughter, Mary Julia, graduated from Harvard University and pursued a career in journalism.
When David Koch passed away in 2019, Julia and her children inherited a 42% stake in Koch Industries, one of the largest privately held corporations in the United States.
Homes and Lifestyle
The Kochs owned several high-profile residences. They first lived at 1040 Fifth Avenue before purchasing a renowned duplex at 740 Park Avenue, which became their primary New York home. Julia later put the apartment on the market in 2022. The family also owns properties in Southampton and Palm Beach, Florida, where Julia now spends more time following her husband’s death.
Philanthropy
Julia plays a leading role in philanthropy through the David H. Koch Foundation, which has directed more than $200 million to science, medicine, and the arts. She also established the Julia Koch Family Foundation, dedicated to healthcare, cultural programs, and education.
Some of her notable contributions include:
- $10 million to Mount Sinai Medical Center for food allergy research.
- Creation of the David & Julia Koch Research Clinic for allergy and asthma at Stanford University.
- A $75 million gift in 2024 to NYU Langone to fund a medical office tower in Palm Beach.
Together with David, she contributed over $1.2 billion to institutions such as the Smithsonian, Memorial Sloan Kettering, and Lincoln Center.
Public Engagement
Julia holds board positions with leading organizations, including Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Venetian Heritage Foundation. She previously served on the board of the School of American Ballet. Despite her immense wealth and influence, she maintains a relatively private lifestyle, dedicating her time to continuing her husband’s philanthropic legacy while also supporting Koch Industries’ business interests.
Wealth
Julia’s fortune comes primarily from her family’s 42% stake in Koch Industries, a global conglomerate with holdings in energy, chemicals, and consumer goods. This inheritance has made her one of the richest women in the world. Beyond securing her place among the world’s wealthiest individuals, this wealth allows her to make far-reaching contributions in science, healthcare, education, and the arts, strengthening her influence both in philanthropy and cultural development.
