Early Life

Ellison was born to an Italian-American pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps and Florence Spellman, a single Jewish mother. Ellison was taken in by his mother's aunt and uncle, Lillian and Louis Ellison, who adopted him when he was nine months old due to pneumonia.

Ellison had a mixed upbringing growing up in the middle-class South Shore neighborhood of Chicago. His adoptive father, who lost his real estate fortune during the Great Depression, was harsh and unsupportive, but his adoptive mother was kind and caring. Ellis Island, where his adoptive father entered the United States, is honored by Ellison's last name.

Despite growing up in a Reform Jewish family, Ellison disapproved of conventional religious rituals, saying he was interested in religious stories but did not believe they were true.

Education

After graduating from Chicago's South Shore High School, Ellison enrolled as a pre-med student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He was named the university's scientific student of the year for his outstanding academic performance, but he left school after his sophomore year due to the death of his adoptive mother.

Ellison briefly studied mathematics and physics at the University of Chicago in 1966, where he also learned about computer design. His interest in technology was sparked by this exposure, which led him to relocate to California and start working as a computer programmer.

Early Career

Ellison was employed by a number of tech firms in California, including:

Ellison worked on a project at Ampex Corporation that served as the foundation for his later database management innovations.
Amdahl Corporation: Contributed to mainframe system development.

Edgar F. Codd's relational database theory, which subsequently served as the basis for Oracle, served as an inspiration to Ellison during this time.

Founding Oracle Corporation

Ellison established Software Development Laboratories (SDL) in 1977 with Ed Oates and Robert Miner.

1986: $31.5 million was raised by Oracle's IPO.
1990s: By using aggressive marketing strategies and diversifying its product line, the company avoided going bankrupt.
Through acquisitions of companies like PeopleSoft, Siebel Systems, and Sun, the company expanded into cloud computing, enterprise software, and hardware solutions in the 2000s.

Ellison served as Oracle’s CEO until 2014, when he transitioned to his current roles as Executive Chairman and Chief Technology Officer.
