Early Life
Ellison was born to an Italian-American pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps and Florence Spellman, a single Jewish mother. Ellison was taken in by his mother's aunt and uncle, Lillian and Louis Ellison, who adopted him when he was nine months old due to pneumonia.
Ellison had a mixed upbringing growing up in the middle-class South Shore neighborhood of Chicago. His adoptive father, who lost his real estate fortune during the Great Depression, was harsh and unsupportive, but his adoptive mother was kind and caring.
