Often described as a reserved and understated counterpart to Alibaba’s Jack Ma, Pony Ma has earned comparisons to Warren Buffett for his strategic investments and acquisitions. He has been included multiple times in Time’s list of the “World’s Most Influential People” and has also appeared in rankings by Forbes, Fortune, and CEOWORLD as one of the most powerful figures in global business.
As of late 2024, Ma’s net worth was estimated at $43 billion, placing him among the top three wealthiest individuals in China and among the world’s 40 richest people.
Early Life and Education
Ma was born in Chaoyang, Shantou, Guangdong Province, and later moved with his family to Shenzhen, where his father worked as a port manager. Growing up in a city that was becoming China’s technology hub, Ma developed a strong interest in science and computing.
In 1989, he enrolled at Shenzhen University, graduating in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Applied Engineering. During his university years, Ma honed his programming skills—an experience that proved instrumental in building Tencent.
Career
Early Work and Founding of Tencent
Ma began his career as a software developer at China Motion Telecom Development, creating programs for pagers for a modest monthly salary. He later worked in the R&D department of Shenzhen Runxun Communications, focusing on internet-based telephony.
In 1998, together with four classmates, Ma co-founded Tencent. Inspired by Israel’s ICQ messenger, the team launched OICQ in 1999. The service quickly grew to more than a million users, but its popularity strained the company’s finances. To survive, Ma secured venture capital in 2000, raising $2.2 million from IDC and PCCW in exchange for a 40% stake.
After AOL acquired ICQ and filed a trademark dispute, Tencent rebranded the service as QQ. By 2004, QQ dominated China’s instant messaging market, leading to Tencent’s IPO in Hong Kong, which raised $200 million.
Expansion and the Rise of WeChat
Following QQ’s success, Ma diversified Tencent into gaming, digital goods, and e-commerce. Virtual item sales and online games became major revenue drivers. In 2010, he encouraged internal competition to create a next-generation messaging app. The result was WeChat (Weixin), launched in 2011, which quickly grew into China’s leading mobile platform with global reach.
Under Ma’s leadership, Tencent expanded aggressively into entertainment, fintech, cloud computing, healthcare, and investments in companies like Tesla, JD.com, and Epic Games.
Philanthropy
In 2016, Ma transferred $2.3 billion worth of Tencent shares to his charitable foundation, focusing on education, healthcare, technology innovation, and disaster relief. His philanthropy underscores his belief in using technology for social good.
Political and Social Roles
Ma has served as a deputy in the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Congress and as a delegate to the 12th National People’s Congress. Known for his cautious public image, he has stressed the importance of responsible internet governance and information security.
Personal Life
Nicknamed “Pony” (from his surname “Ma,” meaning “horse” in Chinese), he is known for his private and low-profile lifestyle. Despite his immense wealth—largely derived from his Tencent stake—Ma avoids the spotlight. He owns luxury properties in Hong Kong and is an avid art collector, with works valued at over $150 million.
In 2018, he published “China on Fingertips”, a book highlighting the country’s rise as a mobile internet powerhouse.
