Rohit Sharma to Skip ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan

Rohit Sharma to Skip Pakistan Visit for Champions Trophy Opening Ceremony

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma will not travel to Pakistan for the opening ceremony of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, following the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) decision to cancel the traditional Captains’ Day event. The annual pre-tournament gathering, which usually features all team captains for a joint photo session and media conference, was scrapped due to tight travel schedules and logistical constraints, according to a report by PTI.

While India’s matches in the tournament are scheduled to be played in the UAE, security concerns surrounding travel to Pakistan have also played a role in Rohit’s absence. The ICC’s decision to drop Captains’ Day—a long-standing tradition—marks a notable departure from past tournaments and has fueled speculation about organizational and security challenges ahead of the event.

Despite the change, the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 remains one of cricket’s most anticipated competitions, set to feature the world’s top teams battling for supremacy in the UAE later this year.

No Opening Ceremony for ICC Champions Trophy 2025: PCB to Host Scaled-Down Inauguration in Lahore

The 2025 ICC Champions Trophy will begin without the traditional grand opening ceremony, as confirmed by recent reports. Instead, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will hold a smaller inauguration event on February 16 at Huzoor Bagh in Lahore to officially mark the start of the tournament. The decision to forgo the full-scale opening ceremony stems from logistical constraints and tight travel schedules among the participating teams.

This change follows the cancellation of the long-standing Captains’ Day event, which typically features all team captains in a joint photo session and media conference before major ICC tournaments. Due to conflicting schedules, the PCB opted to cancel this year’s event, which means India’s captain Rohit Sharma will not travel to Pakistan, as India’s matches will be held in the UAE under the hybrid hosting model.

The absence of an official opening ceremony and other pre-tournament traditions has raised concerns about the overall presentation and atmosphere of the competition. However, the PCB maintains that these adjustments are necessary to ensure a smooth and secure tournament, particularly given the security considerations surrounding travel to Pakistan.

The scaled-down inauguration at Huzoor Bagh will serve as a symbolic start to the prestigious event, as the focus shifts to the on-field action. Despite the absence of the usual fanfare, excitement remains high, with top international teams gearing up for what promises to be a thrilling competition.

About the ICC Champions Trophy 2025

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will take place from February 19 to March 9, featuring matches at four venues — three in Pakistan and one in Dubai. Under the hybrid hosting model approved by the ICC, PCB, and BCCI, India will play all its matches in Dubai due to security and logistical considerations.

Ahead of the tournament, the PCB is also preparing to showcase major infrastructure upgrades. On February 7, the newly renovated Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore will be inaugurated, with Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif invited as the chief guest. Soon after, on February 11, the National Stadium in Karachi will be officially reopened following extensive renovations, with President Asif Ali Zardari expected to attend as chief guest.

Both venues will play key roles in hosting Champions Trophy matches, reflecting Pakistan’s commitment to elevating its cricketing infrastructure and delivering a world-class tournament.

Despite the scaled-back ceremonies, the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy is set to captivate cricket fans across the globe, promising intense rivalries, high-quality cricket, and memorable moments on the international stage.
