Early Life in the Soviet Union and Immigration to the U.S.

Sergey Brin was born in Moscow, Soviet Union, to Jewish parents, Mikhail and Eugenia Brin. His father was a mathematics professor, and his mother worked as a researcher at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center after moving to the U.S.

The Brin family lived in a small three-room Moscow apartment, sharing space with Sergey’s grandmother. Facing anti-Semitic restrictions in the Soviet Union, the family struggled to advance academically and professionally. After years of bureaucratic obstacles, they finally secured visas in 1978.

In May 1979, the Brins left the Soviet Union, traveling through Vienna and Paris before settling in the United States in October of the same year. They began a new life in Adelphi, Maryland, where Sergey attended elementary school and was later home-schooled. His father’s passion for mathematics strongly influenced him, nurturing his own love for science, logic, and problem-solving.

At Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, Maryland, Brin’s interest in mathematics and computers flourished, laying the foundation for his future career in technology.

Academic Path: University of Maryland & Stanford

In 1990, Sergey Brin enrolled at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he pursued a bachelor’s degree in computer science and mathematics, graduating with honors in 1993. During this time, he also interned at Wolfram Research, the creators of the well-known software Mathematica.

Later that year, he joined Stanford University to pursue a PhD in computer science. At Stanford, he met Larry Page, and although the two initially clashed, they soon discovered a shared vision that would transform the digital world.

Founding of Google – The PageRank Breakthrough

In 1996, Brin and Page collaborated on a project to improve search engines. They developed PageRank, an algorithm that ranked web pages based on the number and quality of backlinks. Their first prototype, called BackRub, quickly gained popularity among Stanford students.

By 1997, the project was renamed Google, a play on the mathematical term “googol” (10¹⁰⁰), symbolizing their mission to organize the world’s vast information.

In 1998, with financial support from investors like Andy Bechtolsheim, they officially founded Google Inc. in a garage in Menlo Park, California, rented from Susan Wojcicki (later CEO of YouTube). Google’s efficiency, speed, and accuracy soon outperformed other search engines, making it the world’s leading search platform within just a few years.

Google’s Expansion and Global Dominance

Under Brin and Page’s leadership, Google grew into a tech giant, expanding beyond search into products like:

  • Gmail (2004)

  • Google Maps (2005)

  • YouTube (acquired in 2006)

  • Android OS (2005 acquisition, now the world’s most-used mobile operating system)

Brin was instrumental in driving innovative projects, including Google Glass, the company’s experimental wearable technology.

In 2004, Google went public, instantly making Brin and Page billionaires. Despite immense wealth, both remained focused on innovation and their mission of making information “universally accessible and useful.”

Alphabet Inc. – A New Era

By 2015, Google had expanded far beyond search, venturing into fields like biotechnology, self-driving cars, and AI. To manage this growing portfolio, Brin and Page created Alphabet Inc., with Brin serving as President. Alphabet became the umbrella company for subsidiaries like:

  • Waymo (autonomous vehicles)

  • Verily (life sciences)

  • X (Moonshot Factory)

In December 2019, Brin and Page stepped back from executive duties, appointing Sundar Pichai as CEO of both Google and Alphabet. However, they remain visionary leaders and key shareholders guiding Alphabet’s long-term direction.

Personal Life and Philanthropy

  • Marriages: Brin married Anne Wojcicki (co-founder of 23andMe) in 2007. They had two children before divorcing in 2015. In 2018, he married Nicole Shanahan, with whom he has a daughter; they divorced in 2023.

  • Philanthropy: Brin is a major donor to Parkinson’s disease research, contributing over $1 billion through the Brin Wojcicki Foundation, inspired by his mother’s diagnosis.

  • Other Causes: He has supported organizations such as the Michael J. Fox Foundation, HIAS, and numerous educational and scientific initiatives.

  • Brin has also backed political and social causes, particularly those supporting immigration, science, and democratic values.

Net Worth and Recognition

  • Net Worth (Dec 2024): $164 billion

  • Ranked 7th richest person in the world (Forbes, Bloomberg)

Awards & Honors:

  • Marconi Prize (2004) with Larry Page for contributions to communications technology
