At 14, he launched his first venture—a lawn-mowing business—employing his twin younger brothers, Mark and Warren.
He attended Abington Senior High School, graduating in 1965, then earned his undergraduate degree from Yale University, where he joined the secret society Skull and Bones and founded the Davenport Ballet Society. After a brief stint in the U.S. Army Reserve, Schwarzman earned his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1972.
Investment Career
Schwarzman began his finance career at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, later joining Lehman Brothers, where he became managing director at just 31 and led the global mergers and acquisitions division.
In 1985, he co-founded Blackstone, initially focusing on mergers and acquisitions. Over time, the firm expanded into real estate, private equity, direct lending, and alternative assets. When Blackstone went public in 2007, Schwarzman’s personal stake was valued at $9.1 billion, reflecting his extraordinary financial success. His annual compensation has included multimillion-dollar payouts, making him one of the highest-paid CEOs in the U.S.
Political and Economic Influence
A prominent Republican donor, Schwarzman has consistently supported conservative causes, fundraising for candidates such as George W. Bush, Mitt Romney, and Donald Trump. He has also played a role in fiscal negotiations, including advising on the 2012 fiscal cliff agreement during the Obama administration.
While he publicly condemned the January 6 Capitol attack, Schwarzman has maintained a pragmatic approach to political engagement, often emphasizing the value of advisory influence over partisan rhetoric.
Philanthropy
Schwarzman is a major benefactor in education, culture, and healthcare:
- Schwarzman Scholars (2013): $100 million scholarship program at Tsinghua University in China.
- New York Public Library (2008): $100 million donation, renaming the 42nd Street building.
- Yale University (2015): $150 million for a campus center.
- MIT (2018): $350 million for the Schwarzman College of Computing.
- University of Oxford (2019): £150 million for the Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities.
He also supports healthcare institutions, including New York-Presbyterian Hospital and the Animal Medical Center of New York, and has contributed to sports initiatives such as USA Track and Field for the Olympics. In 2020, he joined The Giving Pledge, committing to donate the majority of his wealth.
Personal Life
Schwarzman has been married twice: first to Ellen Philips, with whom he has a son, Teddy Schwarzman, and later to Christine Hearst, an intellectual property lawyer. He resides in a duplex at 740 Park Avenue, previously owned by John D. Rockefeller Jr., and is known for hosting extravagant celebrations.
Stephen Schwarzman’s career reflects a blend of financial acumen, political influence, and philanthropic ambition, positioning him as one of the most consequential figures in modern global finance.
