Peterffy was born in Budapest during a Russian air raid at the end of World War II. His father emigrated to the U.S. after the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, and in 1965, Peterffy followed, leaving behind his engineering studies. Arriving in New York with no English skills, he received just $100 from his father and was encouraged to support himself.
He began working as an architectural draftsman, but soon took an interest in automation by volunteering to program his firm’s new computer. This curiosity for technology would later shape his career. Reflecting on his philosophy, Peterffy once said: “Business is a collection of processes, and my job is to automate those processes for maximum efficiency.”
Entry into Finance
In 1977, Peterffy purchased a seat on the American Stock Exchange (AMEX) and started trading equity options. He quickly pushed for greater use of technology, introducing handheld computers on the trading floor in the early 1980s—a groundbreaking move at the time. These innovations laid the foundation for Interactive Brokers, which he formally launched in the years that followed. Peterffy stepped down as CEO in 2019 but remains chairman and majority shareholder.
Interactive Brokers and Expansion
Interactive Brokers grew into a global brokerage powerhouse, offering low-cost electronic trading across stocks, options, futures, bonds, and forex. The firm went public in 2007 under the ticker IBKR and later shifted its listing to the Investors Exchange (IEX) in 2018, becoming its first issuer. Praised for affordability and efficiency, it has repeatedly been named “Best Online Broker” and “Lowest Cost Broker” by Barron’s.
In 2021, the company relocated its European operations, placing its Western hub in Ireland and establishing Interactive Brokers Central Europe Zrt. in Budapest, which joined the Budapest Stock Exchange.
Investments and Influence
Beyond his brokerage empire, Peterffy has supported other ventures, including a $50 million investment in The Messenger, a news platform launched in 2023. Earlier, in 1999, he played a pivotal role in urging the SEC to create an electronic link between U.S. options markets, ensuring investors better pricing transparency.
Political Views
Peterffy is known for his outspoken political involvement. In 2012, he personally financed a series of pro-Republican TV ads warning of the dangers of socialism, drawing parallels to his upbringing in Hungary. While some critics found the message exaggerated, others considered it heartfelt and persuasive. Though registered as an independent in Connecticut, he has donated generously to Republican causes, including contributions to Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign.
Personal Life
Peterffy was married to Dale McDonald, with whom he has three children, including William Peterffy. The marriage ended in divorce. He now resides in Palm Beach, Florida, and is passionate about horses and equestrian pursuits. In 2020, he sold his Connecticut estate for $21 million, a significant cut from its original $65 million asking price.
