‘I can do that’: Donald Trump confident about trade deal with China's Xi Jinping

Donald Trump has voiced strong confidence in his ability to strike a fair trade agreement with China, saying such a deal is possible through cooperation with Chinese President Xi Jinping, whom he described as “ambitious.”

In an interview with Fox News, Trump said he recently had a “good” and “friendly” phone conversation with Xi, during which the two leaders discussed trade and other pressing global issues.

The former president, now back in office as the 47th President of the United States, emphasized that he believes productive negotiations with China are within reach.

Trump also recounted the exchange on his social media platform, Truth Social, noting that the discussion covered a range of topics — including trade imbalances, fentanyl, and TikTok. “President Xi and I will do everything possible to make the world more peaceful and safe!” he wrote.

According to Trump’s team, the call took place last Friday, just days before his official return to the White House. During the conversation, Xi expressed optimism about building a “good start” in U.S.–China relations under Trump’s new term. In response, Trump said he was confident the two nations would “solve many problems together” through open communication and mutual respect.

Donald Trump’s Tariff Warning to China : 

Since returning to office, President Donald Trump has repeatedly signaled the possibility of a 10% punitive tariff on Chinese imports, citing concerns over the flow of fentanyl from China into the United States through Mexico and Canada. Despite his campaign pledge, he has yet to formally implement these tariffs. Trump has also threatened similar trade measures targeting the European Union, Mexico, and Canada, as part of his broader effort to reshape global trade relations.

Tensions between Washington and Beijing remain high, extending beyond trade disputes to include growing competition in technology and defense. The U.S. has continued to raise alarms over the ownership of TikTok, the widely used social media app owned by China-based ByteDance. While the U.S. Supreme Court upheld legislation banning TikTok, President Trump issued an executive order delaying its enforcement and urging ByteDance to sell the app’s U.S. operations to an American company.

U.S. Intensifies Action Against TikTok Over Security Concerns :-

The U.S. government has increased its scrutiny of TikTok amid fears that the app poses a national security threat. Lawmakers and intelligence officials have expressed concern that the platform’s data collection practices could allow the Chinese government to access sensitive information about American users.

In response, the Trump administration has pushed for a forced sale of TikTok’s U.S. assets while temporarily halting the app’s ban to allow negotiations. The decision has sparked widespread debate about data privacy, cybersecurity, and the growing technological rivalry between the U.S. and China.

Government officials have emphasized the importance of protecting Americans’ personal data from potential foreign exploitation. The administration has also begun reviewing other foreign-owned tech firms for similar national security risks, underscoring Washington’s broader push for “digital sovereignty.”
