Zhang Yiming (born April 1, 1983) is a Chinese entrepreneur best known as the founder of ByteDance, the company behind Toutiao and the global short-video sensation TikTok (known as Douyin in China). As of October 2024, his fortune was estimated at $45.6 billion by Forbes and $43.1 billion by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, making him the richest person in China that year. Although he stepped down as CEO in November 2021, Zhang retains more than half of ByteDance’s voting rights, maintaining significant influence over the company he built.

Born in Fujian, China, on April 1, 1983, Zhang was the only child of two civil servants. In 2001, he enrolled at Nankai University in Tianjin, where he studied microelectronics before switching to software engineering. He graduated in 2005 with a degree in computer engineering and met his future wife during his university years.
Early Career
Zhang began his career in 2006 as the fifth employee and first engineer at the travel site Kuxun, later rising to technical director. After a short stint at Microsoft in 2008—which he found too rigid—he joined the startup Fanfou, before founding his first venture, 99fang.com, a real estate search platform. He left the company in 2012 to pursue new opportunities.
Founding ByteDance
That same year, Zhang launched ByteDance with the vision of using artificial intelligence to deliver personalized content directly to mobile users. Frustrated by search engines like Baidu that blended results with hidden ads, he sought to create a more transparent, recommendation-driven platform. ByteDance’s breakthrough came with the news app Toutiao, which quickly attracted millions of daily users. By 2014, Sequoia Capital had joined investors, backing the company’s rapid growth.
TikTok and Global Reach
In 2015, ByteDance introduced Douyin, later launched abroad as TikTok. Its short-form video format proved enormously popular worldwide, particularly after ByteDance’s $800 million acquisition and integration of Musical.ly in 2016. Zhang’s leadership style, modeled on U.S. tech firms like Google, emphasized innovation, open communication, and global ambition—unusual among Chinese tech founders.
Controversies and Political Pressure
ByteDance’s rise was not without challenges. In 2018, Chinese regulators shut down its joke-sharing app Neihan Duanzi for failing to reflect “socialist core values.” Zhang issued a rare public apology and pledged closer alignment with the Communist Party’s guidelines. Abroad, ByteDance has faced scrutiny, including U.S. accusations of political ties, though Zhang has largely kept a low public profile.
Leadership Transition
In May 2021, Zhang announced his decision to step down as CEO, citing the need for fresh leadership to drive the next stage of growth. His longtime colleague Liang Rubo succeeded him later that year, while Zhang retained strategic influence through his voting control.
Wealth and Recognition
TikTok’s global dominance solidified Zhang’s place among the world’s most successful entrepreneurs. By 2024, his wealth made him the richest person in China. He has been widely recognized for his achievements, including spots on Forbes China’s 30 Under 30 (2013), Fortune’s 40 Under 40 (2018), and Time’s 100 Most Influential People (2019).
Personal Life
Despite his immense wealth and influence, Zhang is known for his preference for privacy. He lives quietly with his wife, whom he met during his university years, and rarely makes personal details public.
